In June of 1947, a
charter was being gathered for the Taylor Township Moose Lodge to be
designated at Lodge #887. Chapter members were being gathered by
Al Jobbitt, John Paquette, and Al Gagnier who was also the first
Governor of the Lodge.
Taylor Township #887 was instituted on December 7, 1947 with a class of sixty-eight (68) charter members in attendance. The Ritual Ceremony was performed by the Windsor Lodge #1499 Ritual Staff. In the beginning meetings were held in members houses, church basements, and the third floor of the original Colonial House Restaurant. In a short period of time the Lodge rented an old machine shop located at Telegraph Road and Crowley. Things were a little primitive at first, heat was provided by an old pot-bellied stove. Many hardships were endured the least of which was frozen pipes. In 1953 with a bank account bulging with $200.00, the members bought 5-3/4 acres of property for $6,800.00. This group sure had a lot of faith in themselves and the good will of God. Shortly thereafter ground was broken for a Lodge home. The first building was 80' x 50'. This area is now used as our small hall and the kitchen. The building was erected using available monies to purchase the materials. The cost of the materials were raised by donations and the sale of bonds to our members. All the labor was supplied by members of the Lodge on a volunteer basis. On January 30, 1955, our new Lodge home was dedicated. All Lodge bartenders, cleaning crews, and maintenance was by volunteer help. In 1959 all bonds were called in and paid off. The Lodge membership steadily grew and we had outgrown our facilities and plans were laid to triple the size of the building, an addition the size of 100' x 80'. In May of 1960, Mooseheart approved our planned expansion. Sales of bonds started again in July of 1960 with Brother William (Bill) White as Chairman of Finance. With $2,187.00 in the building fund ground was broke on July 12, 1960. $40,000.00 in bonds were sold to pay for the new addition and so it began. In six months this addition which we are now occupying now was erected and covered. In November of 1960, the membership held it's first convention! This addition was dedicated on March 16, 1961. In 1977 we purchased the northern half of the property for $55,000.00 eight times the amount we paid for the first half. We received "Family Center" status from Moose International on September 16, 1998.
